Free Online Metronome with Tap Tempo and Time Signatures

Practice in time with a steady, precise click. UtilHub's free online metronome plays any tempo from 20 to 300 BPM, set with the slider, the + and − buttons, or by tapping along to a song. Choose a time signature such as 3/4, 6/8, or 7/8, accent the first beat of each bar, and add eighth notes, triplets, or sixteenths to work on subdivisions. Clicks are scheduled on your device's audio clock rather than a JavaScript timer, so the beat stays steady even when the page is busy or the tab is in the background. Pick a click, woodblock, or beep sound, set a practice timer, and install it on your phone for practice anywhere.

How to use Metronome

  1. Set the tempo with the slider, the + and − buttons, or Tap tempo.
  2. Choose a time signature and whether to accent the first beat.
  3. Pick a subdivision to hear eighth notes, triplets, or sixteenths.
  4. Press Start, or the Space bar, and play along.
  5. Raise the tempo as you improve — changes apply on the next click.

Features

  • Odd meters and subdivisions — 1/4 to 12/8 with natural accents, plus eighths, triplets, and sixteenths.
  • Built for practice — Three sounds, volume control, a stop timer, keyboard shortcuts, and a large beat display.

Frequently Asked Questions

What BPM should I practice at?

Start at a tempo where you can play the passage cleanly several times in a row — often 60 to 70 percent of the target speed. Once it feels easy, raise the metronome by 4 or 5 BPM and repeat. Slow, accurate repetitions build muscle memory that holds up at full tempo far better than rushing through mistakes.

How do I find the BPM of a song?

Play the song and press Tap tempo, or the T key, in time with the beat for four to eight taps. The metronome averages the gaps between your taps and sets the tempo, so one uneven tap barely changes it. Press Start to compare the click with the recording and fine-tune with + and −.

How does the metronome count 6/8 time?

In 6/8, 7/8, 9/8, and 12/8 each click is an eighth note, and the beats are grouped with a lighter accent: 3+3 in 6/8 and 2+2+3 in 7/8. To feel 6/8 in two instead, choose 2/4 and set the subdivision to triplets.

Why is there no sound on my phone?

On iPhone the silent switch mutes browser audio, so turn silent mode off and raise the media volume. Browsers also block sound until you tap the page, which is why the metronome only starts when you press Start. If it stays silent, close other apps that are playing audio and try again.
