Extract Text from PDF Online — Free, Private, with OCR

Get the words out of a PDF without retyping them. UtilHub's free PDF to text converter extracts the text of every page into plain text you can copy, search, paste into a document, or give to an AI assistant. Scanned pages have no text layer, so they are read with OCR, the same optical character recognition used by our Image to Text tool. Everything happens in your browser: contracts, bank statements, and research papers are never uploaded, and there are no page limits, queues, or sign-ups. Turn on "Remove line breaks" to rejoin sentences the PDF split across lines, or add page numbers between pages to keep your place in long documents.

How to use PDF to Text

  1. Drop one or more PDF files into the upload area.
  2. Keep "Read scanned pages with OCR" on, and pick the language if the scans are not in English.
  3. Wait while each page is read — scanned pages take a few seconds each.
  4. Optionally remove line breaks inside paragraphs or add page numbers between pages.
  5. Copy the text or download it as a .txt file.

Features

  • Scanned pages included — Pages without a text layer are recognized with OCR automatically, in 16 languages.
  • Private by design — The PDF is opened in your browser and never uploaded, so confidential documents stay on your device.
  • Clean, reusable text — Rejoin lines broken mid-sentence, fix ligatures such as "fi", and mark where each page starts.
  • No limits — Convert as many PDFs and pages as you like, several at a time, with no account.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I extract text from a scanned PDF?

Add the PDF with "Read scanned pages with OCR" turned on. Pages that contain only an image of text are rendered and recognized on your device, then added to the output in page order. Choose the document's language first for the best accuracy, and check names and numbers afterwards, because OCR can misread faint or skewed scans.

Why does copied PDF text have line breaks in the middle of sentences?

A PDF stores each printed line separately and does not know where a paragraph starts or ends, so copied text keeps a break at the end of every line. Turn on "Remove line breaks inside paragraphs" and the converter joins those lines back into flowing sentences while keeping the blank lines between paragraphs.

Is it safe to convert confidential PDFs here?

Yes. The file is read by JavaScript in your browser and never sent to a server, unlike converters that upload your document and delete it later. The OCR engine and its language data are downloaded from UtilHub the first time you need them and then cached by your browser.

Can I use the extracted text with ChatGPT or other AI tools?

Yes. Plain text is the easiest format for AI assistants to read and uses far fewer tokens than a PDF upload. Turn on page numbers between pages so the assistant can tell you where a passage came from, then paste the text or attach the downloaded .txt file.
