Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my 1 TB hard drive only 931 GB in Windows?
The manufacturer counts a terabyte as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, the decimal definition. Windows displays the same number of bytes using binary units — dividing by 1024 three times — but labels the result "GB" instead of "GiB". Nothing is missing; the two systems just measure with different rulers. Convert 1 TB to TiB here and you get 0.909, the same discrepancy.
Is a US gallon the same as an imperial gallon?
No, and the gap is large enough to matter. A US gallon is 3.785 litres, an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 — about 20% bigger. The same applies to pints and fluid ounces, and all of them are listed separately here so a recipe or a fuel-economy figure does not silently come out a fifth off.
Why is temperature handled differently from other units?
Because Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points, converting between them needs an offset as well as a scale — °F = °C × 1.8 + 32, not a single multiplication. That is why 0°C is 32°F rather than 0°F. Kelvin shares the Celsius scale but starts at absolute zero, so it is a straight 273.15 offset.
How precise are the results?
Values are computed at full double precision and displayed to ten significant digits, then trimmed of trailing zeros. Very large or very small numbers switch to scientific notation to stay readable. For engineering work the underlying factors are exact by definition, so the only rounding is in what is shown, not in what is calculated.
